Follow our video guide

If you've felt confusion trying to navigate the Social Security website, you are not alone. That's why we've started our How-To video series.

This video on our YouTube page

provides a step-by-step guide on creating a Social Security account online. This process takes about 5 minutes.

Requirements

  • Access to a computer with internet

  • An email account

  • A mobile phone or cell phone number capable of receiving text messages

  • Your Social Security number

Steps

  1. Open your web browser and go to

    ssa.gov

  2. Click on "Sign in" in the upper right-hand corner.

  3. Sign in with an existing username and password or create a new account with login.gov.

  4. Enter your email address, select your preferred language, and check the box confirming that you read and accept the login.gov rules of use.

  5. Confirm your email address by clicking the link in your email inbox that says "Confirm email address."

  6. Create a password, following their strength requirements.

  7. Authenticate your account through a text or voice message via a one-time code.

  8. Continue to SSA. Since you did not yet receive an activation code, select "No" and click Next.

  9. Read and agree to the terms of service.

  10. Fill out your personal information, including your first name, middle initial, last name, Social Security number, date of birth, current home address, and phone number.

  11. Select whether you want to receive your activation code via text or phone call (we suggest not receiving the code by mail since it will add a week or two to the process).

  12. Enter the code in the box provided and click "submit activation code."

  13. Agree to the terms of service. You will need to do this each time you log in.

  14. Now you should be at your landing page!

Benefits of Accessing Your SSA Page

Once you log in to your landing page, you have access to secure online services with the Social Security office.

The landing page for my Social Security displays your eligibility and earnings statement, indicating whether you have worked the 40 quarters or ten years needed to receive benefits. If you have worked for that long, your Part A for Medicare will be free.
